Some kind of machine, perhaps?

Wire. Metal. Screen.

This was at my house once, but that's not my house anymore. No further comment.

Star Trek or What?

When I was a kid I watched a lot of Star Trek. Recently I viewed some images online of galaxies and other deep space phenomena. I decided to try to make some images like that using photography and digital imaging technology. This is the result... or one of them at least. It looks to me like a blend between Hubble photos and a backdrop from an episode of the original series...

Nikon FG | Colour Print, a set on Flickr.

I have been spending a lot of time and effort within the Android photography environment over the past few months. Even before that I was focused on DSLR and even my blackberry... but the truth is, nothing will ever, ever replace print film in terms of it's ability to convey emotion from viewfinder to printed image.

I have loved film since I was a boy. Before I even learned how to hold a camera. Watching my father load up his Nikon FG (which is now mine), cupping the lens between his legs with the strap still around his neck. The ritual of advancing the film into the camera, winding it back snug and advancing until the S was showing on the dial. This is something almost religious. And like all of the other religious activities in my life, it has fallen by the wayside in my adulthood.

Somehow this one feels like more of a loss than any of the rest. I do love digital photography and I believe in the sometimes misguided advance of humanity into the future via technology... but I do hope god forgives me for using a mobile phone to create art and being a part of the decline and (probably) eventual extinction of print film from the world.
